Audi has announced plans to launch a new range of ‘ultra’ models in 2014. Starting with the A6 ultra, the German carmaker then aims to launch A4, A5 Coupe and A5 Sportback later in the year.

The basis of these new models is a new EU6-compliant 2.0-litre TDI engine, with efficiency improved by up to 14 per cent compared to the previous 2.0-litre diesel. The A6 TDI ultra, can be specified in saloon and Avant forms and has been made available across all trim lines, and not only does it benefit from being more fuel efficient with lower CO2 emissions it is also more powerful, packing 190PS up from 177PS. At launch the new engine can only be coupled to Audi’s new seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch however a manual gearbox is in the works.

The new engine has been designed to deliver three different power outputs, the most potent being the 190PS found in the A6, however a 136PS version will arrive on the A4 and a 163PS version will arrive on both the A4 and A5.

Audi Board Member for Development, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, said: “The latest TDI technology, ultra-efficient transmissions, advanced exhaust aftertreatment - customers will hardly see anything, but they'll notice the effects of powerful acceleration and, thanks to extremely low fuel consumption, when paying at the gas station. The Audi ultra models score points with big advantages for everyday operation - just what customers appreciate.”

Combined economy and emissions in the new A6 2.0 TDI ultra with the seven-speed S tronic transmission show the most impressive improvement, with up to 64.2 miles per gallon delivered along with CO2 output of just 114g/km. A significant improvement over the outgoing model’s 56.5mpg/132g/km. The Avant isn’t left behind either, with its combined stats reading 119g/km and 61.4mpg.

Audi Head of Powertrain Development, Dr. Stefan Knirsch, said: “An innovative, highly efficient SCR system removes nitrogen oxides from the exhaust. This measure means that the new ultra models will of course meet the future Euro 6 emission standards while achieving lower fuel consumption.”

These improvements also have an effect on Benefit-in-kind, with the new model dropping from 21 per cent to 17 per cent. This equates to a total annual charge for a 40 per cent tax payer of £2,380 - the lowest liability for a conventionally powered premium executive class car.

Drivers can still select from the entire trim range – so SE, S line and Black Edition can be considered – and the only tell-tale sign of the car being an ‘ultra’ is some rather subtle badging on the rump underneath the TDI badge.
