German brand Audi has revealed the TT offroad concept at the Beijing Motor Show, showcasing a possible new direction for the famous coupe/roadster. The design study also features Audi’s e-tron quattro drive system which is a plug-in hybrid system capable of producing a combined output of 408PS. The show car can sprint from 0 to 62mph in just 5.2 seconds, yet produces only 45g/km of CO2 thanks to the fact that it can travel up to 50km on electric power before the engine kicks in.

Strip away the fancy powertrain and the concept still offers a glimpse of where the brand might go with the TT family, as Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development commented: “It combines the sporty genes of the TT with the strengths of a compact Audi SUV. Its plug-in hybrid drive with the option of inductive charging is a major step toward the mobility of the future. We chose to present the Audi TT offroad concept in China, our second domestic market, because it represents the urban mobility of tomorrow: It is sustainable, dynamic, intelligent and connected.”

Measuring 4.39 metres long, 1.85 metres wide and with a wheelbase of 2.63 metres, the TT offroad is not dissimilar to the Audi Q3, however at 1.53 metres tall it is 8 centimetres lower. From the side, the concept borrows the same style short overhangs of the coupe, while the window design follows the sleek coupe-like line. The designers have also succeeded in making the show car appear hunkered-down on the road.

The innovative powertrain featured in the car combines a 2.0-litre TFSI unit linked to a 40 kW electric motor and a six-speed e-S tronic transmission. The dual-clutch transmission sends the torque to the front wheels. Mounted on the rear axle of the Audi TT offroad concept is a second electric motor independent of this drive unit.

Another innovative feature of the TT offroad concept is the use of Audi Wireless Charging technology, which enables the battery to be recharged when the vehicle is parked over a recharging plate with a coil and an inverter (AC/AC converter).  Seen as many as the next evolution of electric recharging, the alternating magnetic field of the infrastructure side induces a 3.3 kW alternating current across the air gap in the secondary coil, which is integrated into the vehicle. The current is inverted and fed into the electrical system. Safe to people and animals the field is only generated when the car is parked over the plate and is more than 90 per cent efficient.
