Audi S8 2019: flagship gets 570hp mild-hybrid V8
Say hello to the 2019 S8 – the flagship performance model of the Audi A8 range. Featuring a 570hp 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and mild-hybrid tech, it’s aiming to take on Mercedes-AMG’s S63 as well as BMW’s M760i.
On the outside, changes are subtle. The bumpers and body kit give the car a wider look, while round the back you’ll find a pair of twin-exit tailpipes on either side.
Huge 21in alloy wheels will also be available, while you’ll be able to add to the car’s sporty look further by opting for a styling pack that swaps chrome trim for black pieces.
Inside, it’s largely the same as the standard S8 – there’s the twin-screen MMI infotainment system in the centre of the dash, while the layout of Audi’s virtual cockpit system gets the ‘S’ treatment to give the dials a sportier feel. Other tweaks include unique quilted stitching patterns and carbon fibre trim pieces along the door and dashboard.
No performance figures have been confirmed, but its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 will likely propel it from 0-62mph in around four seconds. It’ll be the only available engine in the S8, and it bucks the recent trend of Audi’s ‘S’ line-up using diesel power.
It does, however, feature 48V mild-hybrid technology. This consists of a starter-generator and lithium-ion battery pack that aids the engine and boosts the start-stop system. It also incorporates a clever motorway coasting mode and cylinder deactivation tech.
Audi has also turned its attention to the chassis of the S8. It gets a rear-wheel steer system that we’ve already seen on the S8 along with a predictive air suspension system that scans the road ahead and adjusts the car according to bumps in the road.
All models come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and of course Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system. Prices are to be confirmed, although expect the S8 to list from around £100,000 when it arrives in the UK later this year.
