Audi SQ8 2019: Performance SUV offers biturbo V8 with 429hp and 900Nm of torque
Audi has announced the launch of a new, performance-focused version of its top-tier luxury SUV.
Due to arrive this summer, the SQ8 will feature a 4.0-litre V8 mild-hybrid diesel engine producing 429hp and a mind-blowing 900NM of torque. A 0-62 time of 4.8 seconds is helped thanks to the eight-speed automatic gearbox and Quattro all-wheel drive.
Notable as the most powerful diesel engine available on the European market, the V8 biturbo combines its potency with a high level of economy.
In the eight-cylinder heads, the intake-side is on the outside and the hot exhaust-side with the two turbochargers in the inner ‘V’ working in favour of immediacy of response. To further limit turbo lag, only one charger is active at low engine speeds with the second charger engaging at 2,200 rpm.
The backbone of the mild-hybrid system is an electrically powered compressor (EPC) which also assists the turbochargers when starting off and when accelerating at low engine speed. A compact lithium-ion battery serves as the 48-volt main onboard electrical system’s energy storage unit. This can power the monstrous SQ8 at speeds up to 14mph and recover up to 8kW of power.
If the driver lifts off the accelerator at speeds of between 34mph and 99mph, the Audi SQ8 TDI can either recuperate, travel with the engine at idle, or coast with the engine completely deactivated for up to 40 seconds.
A more aggressive bodykit and a coupe-like roofline further emphasise the mean and mighty credentials of the Audi SQ8. As standard, it comes with 21in alloy wheels, adaptive air suspension and Audi’s Drive Select dynamic handling system, while 22in alloys, HD Matrix LED headlights, red brake calipers and carbon-ceramic brakes are available as optional extras.
Step inside and it’s pure luxury. The SQ8 features two large touchscreens with haptic and acoustic feedback as its main operating elements, as also seen on the flagship Audi A8. Voice control, WiFi hotspot and support for Amazon Alexa, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are all included as standard. Leather and Alcantara-trimmed sports seats, stainless steel pedals and a digital instrument cluster finish off the interior.
With its three-metre wheelbase, the SQ8 offers a generous and ergonomic amount of space. The three-seat system in the rear can be moved forwards and backward as desired with the boot offering 605-litres which extends to 1,755-litre capacity. An electrically operated tailgate features as standard.
The SQ8 also offers a variety of safety technology, including adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, active lane assist and a 360-degree camera. In conjunction with the efficiency assistant, the system predictively slows down and accelerates the Audi SQ8 TDI based on its evaluation of sensor information, navigation data, and road signs.
Due to arrive in September, prices are still TBC.
