BMW has revealed the latest iteration of its X1 crossover, which is set to premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Boasting a fresh look, more space and new engines, the Audi Q3 rival is set to go on sale this October.

BMW X1 2016 White Front Dynamic

The Bavarian company tells us that the new X1 is up to 17% more efficient than its predecessor, with two petrol engines and three diesels offering between 148 and 228bhp. Unlike the 1 Series we drove last month, the engines are all four-cylinder units mated to either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Fuel consumption will range from  44 to 69mpg and CO2 emissions will fall between 109 and 149g/km.

Although the X1 will be based on the same front-wheel-drive platform as the 2 Series Active Tourer and Gran Tourer, four-wheel-drive versions of the crossover will be offered with a development of the computer-controlled xDrive system. Using an electrically controlled clutch to distribute the drive between the front and rear wheels as required, the system should keep fuel consumption low while still offering plenty of grip.

BMW X1 2016 White Rear Static

The X1 will offer plenty of room, too. The new engines are said be mounted across the width of the car, rather than lengthways, to free up extra cabin space. As a result, the knee room for rear passengers has been increased by 37mm while the boot has been expanded by a significant 85 litres, upping total capacity to 505 litres. The new X1 has grown externally, too, with an extra 53mm of height providing a more commanding driving position.

As is customary these days, BMW has rammed the X1 with equipment ranging from the mundane, like the standard-fit air conditioning, satellite navigation and USB connectivity, to the more advanced, such as the BMW Head-Up Display. Rather than using a dedicated pop-up screen as found in cars like the Peugeot 508, the display is projected directly onto the dashboard, providing information such as speed and navigation instructions without the driver needing to look down at the instruments.

X1s will also be available with the Driving Assistant Plus safety system, which includes the Active Cruise Control system capable of maintaining distance to the car in front at all speeds, Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Jam Assistance and a collision warning system with autonomous emergency braking.
