The Prime Minister, David Cameron has unveiled plans for the ‘biggest, boldest and most far reaching road improvement plan in four decades’ with plans for over 100 major road projects by the end of the decade.

Speaking to business leaders at the Confederation of British Industry’s (CBI) annual conference today, Cameron announced a £15 billion long-term Roads Investment Strategy.

The strategy plans for hundreds of extra lane miles on the motorways and trunk roads to help improve journey times and increase road capacity.

Projects include planned expansion of the A303 near Stonehenge, A1 near Newcastle, A47 in the east of England, trans-Pennine routes and A27 on the south coast among others.

Speaking at the conference, Cameron said: “This will be nothing less than a roads revolution – one which will lead to quicker journey times, more jobs, and businesses boosted right across the country.”

However Michael Dugher MP, Labour’s Shadow Transport Secretary, criticised the plans, saying that they include no actual additional money for road investment.

Further details of the government’s plans are expected to be revealed as part of next month’s Autumn Statement.
