Cobra, a provider of safety, security and telematics systems, more than doubled its sales of electronic speed limiters during the second half of 2013 as fleet managers used the devices to decrease fuel costs and fulfil their duty of care towards their employees.

Cobra saw sales rise by 122%, with most of the recipient vehicles being vans. However, some fleets have introduced the systems on their cars.

With recent figures from the Department for Transport claiming that speed has been a factor in killing or injuring 3,000 motorists every year and fuel prices at record highs, capping the speed of fleet vehicles has been an increasingly popular move.

Several companies have also cited the ‘stealth cameras’ being introduced on motorways like the M1 and M25 and the proposed 60mph limit on the M3 as reasons for installing the limiters.

Cobra UK’s Managing Director, Andrew Smith (pictured), said: “Speed limiters are being considered as a non-evasive way of keeping employees safe while they are driving on company business.

“The association between speed reduction and reduced fuel use is obvious, but there have been a surprising number of companies who are turning to speed limiters for Duty of Care reasons.

“We have had requests for towbar speed limiters and also for limiters just for urban use as companies come up with innovative ways to keep their drivers safe and legal.”
