From fast engines to frugal fuel economy, there are many features that carmakers heavily promote to attract motorists: however, in the case of the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, it’s all about putting information in the hands of the drivers.

Its new advanced cluster display will offer 69 sources of information, bringing everything from a tyre thread temperature display to an interactive performance timer right in front of its drivers.

There will be three analogue gauges for engine-coolant temperature, speed and fuel levels; as well as an eight-inch liquid crystal display screen allowing motorists to select driver mode, such as track, tour and sport themes. According to Jason Stewart, the interaction designer for General Motors, it was important to bring the advanced technologies of the vehicle into the driver’s display.

“The touring theme places more emphasis on multimedia and infotainment; the sport theme emphasises performance features with a prominent shift indicator and a large radial tachometer; track theme offers a race-inspired layout containing a sweeping tachometer, Corvette racing inspired shift lights and permanent lap-time displays,” he said.

“Each of these three themes can also be configured so that drivers can personalise their experience in the Stingray.”

There are actually 10 features that will boost the driver’s information:

- Tour theme: Gives information for commuting and long distance driving.

- Sport theme: Designed for a classic sports car experience with a radial tachometer that dominates the display.

- Track theme: Prioritises track information such as with a large gear indicator.

- Adjustable redline: Suggests maximum engine speed when the engine is cold.

- Tachometer: Includes a ring around the tachometer that will glow whenever the revs per minute increases.

- Shift lights: Provides easy-to-see shift notification at high speeds.

- Friction bubble: Allows drivers to see how close they are to the car’s limits.

- Tyre temperature gauge: Informs drivers as tyres heat up so peak grip and track performance can be achieved.

- Acceleration timer: Enables drivers to measure acceleration run.

- Lap timer: Show best lap times on a road course.
