Toyota reckons its array of hybrid vehicles could be the perfect solution to the UK’s poor air quality.

New government reports have recently revealed that the UK will likely exceed EU limits for nitrogen dioxide emissions by at least another 15 years.

With diesel cars being a major source of the UK’s nitrogen dioxide emissions, hybrid cars could offer the perfect cleaner alternative, yet still offer diesel-like levels of fuel economy.

Toyota reckons its array of hybrid vehicles could be the perfect solution to the UK’s poor air quality.

Toyota has the largest hybrid range of any car brand, offering the Prius, Prius+, Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Yaris Hybrid, Auris Hatch and Auris Touring Sports hybrid models. Combined fuel economy for a standard Prius stands at a respectable 72.4mpg.

Hybrid models like these emit virtually no NOx (including NO2) or particulates and can even run on electric power alone for short distances.

The Prius Plug-in, which is a rechargeable hybrid, can run a little further than standard hybrid models, capable of running on electric power alone for up to 15.5 miles, allowing it to pass through urban areas without emitting any pollution. The Prius Plug-in can run a little further than standard hybrid models

Exceeding NO2 limits until 2030

A Toyota spokesman said: “People are now well aware of the benefits of the low CO2 emissions associated with our hybrids, and the importance of reducing greenhouse gases to protect the atmosphere. The impact of NOx on air quality and public health is a growing concern, and it’s an area where, again, Toyota’s hybrid technology performs strongly.

“By choosing a hybrid vehicle, our customers can virtually eliminate NOx and particulate emissions and reduce their carbon footprint, most importantly when driving in urban traffic – the worst pollution hot-spots. Low running costs, a superb reliability record and no-compromise cabin and luggage space all add to the compelling hybrid argument.”

Statistics recently released by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs revealed that NO2 emission levels in London, Birmingham and Leeds will exceed EU limits until at least 2030.

The case against the UK for its failure to meet the legal limits is currently before the European Court of Justice, in what is considered to be the longest-running

Nitrogen dioxide emissions are linked to respiratory diseases and even premature death. Every year, 29,000 people die prematurely in the UK as a result of air pollution – more than die in traffic accidents and passive smoking combined.
