A new car club is to launch in Spain which will allow motorists to rent a Nissan LEAF electric supermini by the hour. The new car sharing schemes in Madrid and Barcelona will be run by a division of ALD Automotive and will be predominately aimed at small businesses without the resources or need for a full company car fleet.

A total of 23 models will be used for the scheme, enabling employees of small businesses to make use of the vehicles for occasional needs such as attending meetings or making deliveries.

Cars can be hired for as long as they are needed and payments made quickly and easily using a mobile phone.

Pedro Malla, CEO of ALD Automotive, said: "With this delivery of 23 Nissan electric vehicles we are kicking off a service which is designed to maximise the use of EVs by businesses and which reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship."

The Spanish initiative follows similar schemes recently established in Estonia and Germany. In Germany, a fleet of 40 EVs including five Nissan LEAFs are part of the Ruhr Auto Project first started in Essen. Eventually the project aims to roll out a network of EV car sharing clubs across the country.

In July 2013, Estonian Governmental foundation Kredex established a project in partnership with ELMO Rental to introduce a fleet of 24 EVs—16 of which are Nissan LEAFs—into two of the country’s large towns - Tallin and Tartu. The scheme has proven very popular. The price (€6 for the first hour, €3 for every subsequent hour and no more than €30 for 24hrs) includes unlimited charging on Estonian’s extensive quick charge network— the first country in the world to have a complete cross-country network of rapid chargers.
