Euro NCAP has released the latest safest ratings for nine all-new cars, with the Ford Fiesta, Jeep Compass, Mazda CX-5, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet, Vauxhall Grandland X and Renault’s Koleos all receiving the full five stars.

Top five safest cars of 2017

Kia’s supermini Picanto and Rio hatchback both achieved three stars, although this was bumped up to four and five when optional safety packs were added. The crash testers also gave the Opel Ampera-e a respectable four stars, although this car won’t be available in the UK.

Despite the general positive showing, Euro NCAP warned that some of the cars demonstrated a lack of robustness when it came to side impacts. In the pole test of the Jeep Compass, readings in the dummy’s chest indicated injury risk values above the limit to qualify for points.

Side impacts still an issue

For child occupants, this was also the case for C-Class Cabriolet and the Kia Picanto. Last year, Euro NCAP added a 10-year old dummy to the test, which has provided useful information in certain types of crashes.

Euro NCAP commented: “All occupants deserve to be equally well protected, whether they’re an adult driver or a child seated in the rear. The adoption of a 10-year-old child dummy in our test last year allows us to highlight areas for improvement, even in five-star cars.”

Ford Fiesta impresses

Overall it was the new-gen Ford Fiesta that impressed testers most. With a full five-star rating it joins the Seat Ibiza as the second supermini of 2017 to get top marks.

Euro NCAP noted that it achieved five stars with standard equipment only, and noted that the competition won’t gain the same kind of grade if safety packs are an option.

The Kias for example, are available with Advanced Driving Assistance Pack, which includes the likes of automatic emergency braking, but it remains on the options list for now.
