Having teased us late last year with a video featuring a camouflaged car outracing a top-of-the-line Tesla Model X, a Bentley Bentayga, and a Ferrari 488GTB, Faraday Future has finally pulled the sheet off the FF91 at CES 2017 in Las Vegas.

What's the fastest accelerating EV in the world? The FF91

As revealed in the teaser video, the FF91 can race from 0-60 in a record breaking 2.39 seconds thanks to a 130kWh battery that produces 1,800Nm of torque.

On top of that the new car on the block also claims more than 378 miles of range, with the home charger achieving 50% of full charge in just over four hours.

Long, low, and wide, the car offers limo-like dimensions and comfort to go with those supercar statistics, and inside you’ll find fully reclining seats and flat surfaces that double as touchscreens for the ultimate luxury feel.

The glimpse afforded us at CES has revealed a car that is attempting to tick as many boxes as possible. Supercar? Yes. Luxury passenger car? Absolutely. But it also sits high on 22-in wheels and takes many styling cues from SUVs, including its rounded front and angular rear.

Even then, despite its size, design and absurd acceleration, on the road it promises the driving dynamics of a midsize car and a ride height that actively adjusts depending on speed. Tick another segment box off.

Perhaps its coolest feature though is a pop-up LIDAR sensor

Perhaps its coolest feature though is a pop-up LIDAR sensor, which provides basic self-driving capabilities such as a driverless-valet function where the car finds its own parking space. This is all thanks to the 10 HD cameras, 13 long and short range radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors dotted around the car.

If you cast your mind back to CES 2016, you’ll be amazed that this is even related to the Batmobile-esque concept glimpsed then, with this ultra-luxury passenger car more akin to something Bruce Wayne would be seen in than his dark alter-ego.

The Batmobile-esque concept

Alas, as exciting as this glimpse was it will be another year before production starts. Prospective buyers can already place a refundable deposit for the FF91 ($5,000) and as such no list price has been confirmed.

Sound too good to be true? It’s not all been plain sailing for Faraday Future. As reported on Wired, several members of a senior staff recruited from the likes of Tesla, BMW, and Google, as well as the aerospace and medical device sectors have reportedly jumped ship recently.

On top of this, the company fell behind in paying the contractor building its factory in Nevada, prompting state treasurer Dan Schwartz to call Faraday Future “a Ponzi scheme”. Ouch.

 Faraday Future takes on Tesla

As has been proven time and again, it’s one thing to build an exciting and enticing demo car and move forward in producing it to a large volume that conforms legally to the road. Tesla is advancing in this endeavour but even it still struggles to produce the volumes expected.

We’re rooting for Faraday Future and 2018 is shaping up to be an interesting year for electric and hybrid cars, with every manufacturer having something in the pipeline.
