Ferrari has revealed a new 770bhp track-derived version of the F12 Berlinetta supercar that pays homage to the Tour de France Automobile road races, which Ferrari so regularly won in the 1950s and ‘60s.

Not to be confused with the cycling race of the same name, the Tour de France Automobile was run between 1899 and 1986 and traversed France in a series of stages.

To mark Ferrari’s achievements at the race, the special edition will be named F12tdf and features a range of performance-focused upgrades – not least an increase in power output. The engine is the same 6.3-litre V12 as the standard F12, but small tweaks have been made to up power from 730 to 770bhp and achieve a 15Nm increase in maximum torque, bringing the total up to 705Nm. All that is fed to the wheels by a latest-generation automatic transmission, which is faster through the gears than that of the standard car.

Add that to the diet that has seen the F12tdf weigh in at 110kg lighter than the standard car and the result is a 0-62mph time that’s cut from 3.1 to 2.9 seconds. To cope with that performance, the F12tdf has had to pinch the LaFerrari’s high-tech Extreme Design one-piece brake callipers.

Chassis upgrades have been fitted too, with a trick rear axle and rear-wheel steering and larger front tyres to improve turn-in.

Extra downforce has also been added, and the F12tdf is almost twice as aerodynamically efficient as the F12. That’s thanks primarily to redesigns of the bumpers, the ‘Aerobridges’ on the flanks and the louvres behind the rear wheels, as well as a new rear spoiler and underbody.

While aerodynamic demands have sculpted the bodywork, the interior aesthetic is dictated by the need for lightness. Exposed carbon fibre is everywhere, the glove box has been removed, the door panels are merely carbon fibre shells and even the floor mats have been taken out to save as much weight as possible.

Just 799 examples of the limited-run F12tdf will be built, while the car is expected to cost far more than the £240,000 F12.
