This is the Focus’ first facelift in a number of years, and the changes are reminiscent of those we saw on the latest Fiesta. That means a new front end with standard LED lights and a redesigned grille that incorporates a larger Ford badge.

The grille design has also changed, while a number of styling changes have been incorporated into the trim lines: Titanium, ST-Line, Active and ST. For example, Active trim gets a revised chunky bodykit, while ST-Line adds sportier bumpers and trim pieces.

Although the overall look of the outside hasn’t changed much, it’s a different story when you step inside. You get a much-improved 13in infotainment touchscreen that now floats in the centre of the dashboard.

The heating and climate controls are now operated via the system, which uses Ford’s latest Sync 4 programme. This means it’s also compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and gets a clever voice command feature.

The digital driver display appears more vivid than before too, while other tech enhancements include Blind Spot Assist, a connected satnav system and over-the-air infotainment system updates.

The overall choice of engines hasn’t changed much. That means a range of 1.0-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesels remain available, as well as the 2.3-litre petrol unit featured in the sporty Focus ST.

The biggest change is the mild-hybrid version of the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine can now be specified with a seven-speed automatic gearbox for the first time.
