Ford’s new Ranger pick-up truck will make its European debut at this month’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the Blue Oval has confirmed. Facelifted for 2016, the new Ranger provides more efficiency, brand new technology and a smarter look.

According to the manufacturer, the new Ranger will be up to 17% more fuel-efficient than its predecessor thanks to a new range of diesel engines. The flagship powerplant will be a 3.2-litre, 197bhp diesel, but the less powerful 2.0-litre, 158bhp unit is likely to be the more popular choice. Although it is more powerful than the 123bhp and 148bhp diesels it replaces, stop/start and a new final drive ratio mean it will achieve an impressive 43.5mpg on the combined cycle while CO2 is pumped out at a rate of 171g/km. In comparison, the old Ranger managed just 36.2mpg and 206g/km.

Even though it’s more efficient than ever and two-wheel-drive-only variants are offered lower down the range, Ford is adamant that the Ranger can still compete in terms of off-road capability. Four-wheel-drive variants boast an 800mm wading depth (better than a Land Rover Discovery), a low-range gearbox, 299mm of ground clearance and decent approach and departure angles. It should be a decent tow car, too, thanks to a 3.5-tonne maximum braked trailer weight.

On the outside, the new Ranger benefits from a cosmetic makeover, with Mustang-inspired front grille and headlights, while Wildtrak models like the one pictured get grey exterior accents, a rear sports hoop and the orange paint job.

Inside, Ranger customers will be able to specify Ford’s new 8in touchscreen and Sync 2 connectivity system, as well as a host of driver assistance features including a lane-keeping aid, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, trailer sway control and adaptive load control, which tweaks the pick-up’s stability control system depending on the vehicle load.
