With SUVs and crossovers growing in popularity every year, it’s no surprise that many of the highlights of this year’s Paris Motor Show come under this category.

From the long-awaited new XC90 to the more obscure SsangYong XIV-Air, here’s our roundup of the 4x4s on show until the 19th.

Volvo XC90

Volvo’s new luxury off-roader should be one of the highlights of the Motor Show.

As well as a sharp, but very Scandinavian, look and a new platform, the XC90 also gets a hybrid powertrain for the first time.

Volvo XC90 2015

The £60,000, top-of-the-range T8 plug-in model will have about 394bhp, but it will manage 109mpg and emits just 60g/km of CO2.

Inside, there’s an entirely new cabin with a huge Tesla-esque touchscreen forming the focal point.

Naturally, safety plays a key part, and the XC90 is rammed with cutting-edge kit capable of detecting pedestrians or cars pulling out of side turnings.

Prices start from £45,785 OTR, or around £7,000 more than the outgoing model.

Porsche Cayenne

The new Cayenne is more of a facelift than an all-new car, with new bumpers and slightly improved economy figures.

New headlights, bumpers and intercooler air vents make up the aesthetic changes, while each engine is a little more efficient and standard kit has improved slightly, but these are all minor differences.

Porsche Cayenne S Diesel Front

More revolutionary is the addition of the plug-in S E-Hybrid to the range. Replacing the old S Hybrid, the new model’s electric motor is twice as powerful, with 95bhp, while the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 under the bonnet has 333bhp, so total output is 428bhp.

After its debut at the Paris Motor Show, the Cayenne will go on sale on October 11.

SEAT Leon X-Perience

SEAT Leon X-PERIENCE Exterior

SEAT’s proper SUV isn’t coming for a few years yet, but the Leon X-Perience is plugging the gap for now.

Essentially a jacked-up Leon ST with four-wheel drive and a bodykit, the X-Perience has plenty of presence and off-road touches, as well as all the practicality of the standard Leon estate.

Under the bonnet, there’s a 2.0-litre diesel engine with either 150hp or 184hp, depending on the transmission chosen. The range-topping 184hp unit is mated to a seven-speed automatic, while the 150hp version gets a six-speed manual.

Kia Sorento

Part of a fleet of Kias being unveiled in the French capital, the third-generation Sorento will make its European debut after a low-key first showing in Korea.

The new Sorento is a little longer than the old car, so interior space is improved, while the new ‘tiger-nose’ grille is larger, as are the bonnet and headlights.

Honda CR-V and HR-V

Honda HR-V

Honda CR-V 2015 FrontHonda has the Nissan Juke in its sights with the HR-V, a crossover based on a similar platform to the Jazz supermini.

The Japanese firm claims the HR-V will have “class-leading” interior space under the coupe-inspired body, while the 1.6-litre Earth Dreams diesel engine from the Civic will lurk under the bonnet.

Meanwhile, Honda has been busy refreshing the CR-V (small image).

Not only has the body been re-worked, but with a new 1.6-litre diesel replacing the current car’s 2.2-litre unit, the CR-V is promising improved economy and emissions.

SsangYong Crossovers

SsangYong XIV-Adventure

Honda isn’t the only one looking for a slice of the Juke’s pie.

SsangYong has announced that it will be bringing two crossover concepts to Paris to preview the X100 – the Juke rival expected to arrive next year.

The XIV-Air and XIV-Adventure feature 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines, while their dimensions are almost identical to the Juke’s.

Suzuki Vitara

The fourth-generation Vitara takes inspiration from the iv-4 concept Suzuki showed at Frankfurt last year, although the little door mirrors are gone.

Suzuki Vitara 2015

As is becoming a trend, the new Vitara will offer bags of scope for personalisation, as well as optional four-wheel drive. Suzuki is also promising “low CO2 emissions” and “outstanding fuel economy in the sector.”

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Concept-S

A whole two years after the debut of the standard Outlander PHEV, Mitsubishi will unveil this new, sportier version.

Although the running gear is expected to be similar to that of the normal Outlander PHEV, the S version gets a “sporty and sophisticated” design both inside and out.
