Hyundai has given us a detailed preview of what we can expect from the new i30 when it comes to the UK in early 2017. The Focus-sized hatchback gets new engines, the latest connectivity tech and active safety features.

What’s new?

The new i30 gets an exterior look that sets it apart from its forebear. A “cascading” grille (that we’ve already seen on the facelifted i10) and LED headlights that wrap around onto the wings give it a classier demeanour than before.

The back end hasn’t seen such a dramatic restyle, but LED tail lights and creased boot make sure it stands out next to its predecessor, while new sets of 15, 16 and 17in alloy wheels will be available too.

The car is shorter than previously thanks mainly to the new bumper designs, with Hyundai claiming this gives the new model a more “dynamic and compact stance on the road”.

And inside?

The inside should mark another big step up for Hyundai who has improved the overall quality and feel of its cars’ interiors dramatically in recent years. Mid-range models and above will feature a “floating” screen, but standard fitment includes a 5in touchscreen interface which will control all navigation (optional), media and connectivity features.

The 8in infotainment system and Apple CarPlay connectivity is options, but all i30s come with a 5in infotainment system.

If you don’t like the look of the i30, the upcoming Kia Rio is another value hatchback to consider

There’s a new multi-function steering wheel too, that claims to “allow easy and intuitive operations of all functions”. It might look smaller from the outside, but with 395 litres of boot space it outdoes several rivals including the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf.

New engines

The i30 gets the best pickings from Hyundai’s engine range, with two petrol and one 1.6 diesel on offer across the range.

Offered with a manual gearbox only is a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo producing 118bhp and 171Nm. This extra bit of power helps it to reach 62mph in just over 11 seconds.

The range-topping petrol is a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo with 138bhp and 242Nm, and you can choose between the six-speed manual gearbox or opt for Hyundai’s newly developed seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. However, this DCT gearbox is a £1,000 premium.

Only one diesel option exists at launch and that’s a 1.6-litre four-cylinder, boasting 109bhp and 280Nm torque. The aforementioned seven speed DCT gearbox is also available on this engine.

A fun driving experience is promised, particuarly from the all new 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol unit.

Here’s all you need to know about the i30’s sibling – the facelifted i10 supermini

If you’re more of a diesel fan, the 1.6-litre has been tried-and-tested in larger models and can be ordered with three different power outputs – the more powerful two getting the option of the seven-speed semi-auto gearbox.

Safety first

Hyundai has gone to town with safety in the new i30, with autonomous emergency braking and driver attention alert systems fitted as standard. Radar-guided cruise control is an option too, which can follow the car in front if travelling at over 6mph.

Other optional safety features include blind spot warning, lane-keeping assist, speed-limit warning and rear cross-traffic alert. A high-beam assistance is also available, but seven airbags come as standard.

How much?

Prices will start from £16,995 for the i30 S 1.0 T-GDi 120PS 6 speed manual, which offers 15” alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, DAB radio with USB and aux connections, Bluetooth with steering wheel controls, electric front and rear windows and driver seat height adjustment.

The top of the range Premium SE enters the range at £23,495 for the 1.4 T-GDi 140PS Manual, adding panoramic sunroof, leather seat facings and a heated steering wheel. Premium SE is also available with the 6 speed manual, 7 speed DCT transmission, with either the 1.4 T-GDi 140PS or 1.6 CRDi 110PS.

Lease prices are still to be confirmed.
