Infiniti’s Q30 premium compact hatchback will cost around £20k OTR when it goes on sale at the start of 2016.

Priced at £19,780 for the 1.6 petrol and £20,730 for the 1.5 diesel, this means the luxury Nissan will undercut BMW’s 1 Series and the Mercedes A-Class, upon which it is based, by just short of £1,000.

However, a less familiar and established badge is likely to place the Q30 at a disadvantage in the leasing market. As such, average contract hire rates are likely to be £30-50 above its equivalent rivals.

Measuring at 4425mm long, 2083mm wide, and 1495mm wide with a 2700mm wheelbase, it is notably larger than its main rivals.

The Q30 boasts more luggage capacity too with 368 litres compared to the 341 and 360 litres you’ll get in the A-Class and 1 Series respectively.

It’ll share engines with some of Nissan’s Qashqai and Juke, namely two 1.6 petrols with 120- and 153hp, a 208hp 2L petrol, while diesel drivers can choose between a 107hp 1.5 or a 170hp 2.2 unit. All are available with a six-speed manual or seven speed DCT automatic gearbox.

That smaller diesel promises the smartest running costs, claiming to return 72.3mpg at 103g/km (VED Band B), which isn’t strong enough to upstage the VED-free and high-70s achievable in the A180 and 116d.

Infiniti hopes the Q30’s looks will hit the right buttons with younger car buyers seeking an alternative to traditional premium compact vehicles.

The 1-Series’ influence on the interior is instantly apparent from the cabin shots below. Infiniti says the Q30’s interior uses the highest quality materials for a premium and modern ambience. Most notable is the use of suede-like material called Dinamica from Italy, appearing on the roof and support pillars.

Equipment is split over three grades: SE, Premium, and Sport. Premium models come on 18-inch wheels, with LED front fog lamps, body-coloured and heated door mirrors, chrome dual rectangular exhaust finishers.

Sport models get a firmer ride and reduced roll, sitting 15mm lower to the ground. Their sporting prowess is boosted by the inclusion of 19-inch wheels, a shapely bespoke bumper, and gloss black front grille.

In a further effort to entice European buyers, there’s the City Black Edition, priced from £26,110 OTR. This Europe-only ‘first edition’ promises an ‘emphasis on the highest quality materials and most advanced technologies’.

Roland Krueger, President of Infiniti, commented: “Q30 makes a daring visual statement through its sculpted, concept-car exterior, unconventional stance and asymmetric cabin design.

“The car has been engineered to exacting standards to deliver a driving experience that is unmistakably Infiniti. Q30 will accelerate the company’s strategy to become a leading global manufacturer of premium cars.”
