New Jaguar XF promises lower lease rates, coming August

The second-generation Jaguar XF will boast class-leading CO2 emissions and fuel economy with more rear passenger space and lower lease rates than any of its rivals when it goes on sale in the UK this August, priced from £32,300.

Jaguar claims that the 5 Series and E-Class rival will have the strongest residuals in the segment, retaining 41% of its value after three years and 60,000 miles, compared to the E-Class’ 37% and 5 Series’ 35%. As a result, the XF should be cheaper to lease than its key rivals.

Chassis

As suggested in the run-up to the XF’s unveiling, many of the lessons learned during the XE and F-Type’s development have been employed, most notably in the weight-saving and engine department.

Its chassis will be up to 75% aluminium, which makes it up to 190kg lighter than the outgoing XF and 80kg lighter than its main competition.

The new car is 7mm shorter in length and 3mm lower but the wheelbase has been stretched by 51mm to 2960mm which, Jaguar says, will give it class-leading leg-, knee-, and head-room.

Engines

Jaguar has gifted the XF the same 161bhp and 178bhp Ingenium 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engines as the XE.

This means CO2 emissions will sink as low as 104g/km with fuel economy exceeding 70mpg, when mated to a six-speed manual transmission. That will place it firmly in the B VED Band with £20 annual road tax. The same engine will also be available as an eight-speed automatic.

Other engines will include the 297bhp version of the 3.0-litre V6 diesel also seen in the current XF, the new XJ and the Range Rover Sport and the 375bhp V6 supercharged petrol engine from the F-Type sports car, both of which will be offered solely on the range-topping S model, which will cost £49,945.

Interior

The new XF’s cabin takes inspiration from the XJ and the new XE, so the horseshoe-shaped band of veneer around the window sills remains, while the centre stack is pure XE.

That’s no bad thing though, because there’s 10.2-inch dual-view touchscreen from the XE. It’s a much better system than the out-dated unit of the old XF and it allows the driver to view vital info such as satellite navigation directions while the front passenger can watch TV or a DVD.

Like the XE, the XF has a lightly revamped range which replaces the old entry-level ‘Luxury’ trim with ‘Prestige’. Further up the range, there’s the sporty R-Sport (from £34,200) and the high-spec Portfolio (from £36,400).

Simplicity

Jaguar’s Director of Design Ian Callum, who also oversaw the F-Type design as well as the original XF, said the new car's design was inspired by simplicity.

“Every exterior line on the XF has a clear purpose – nothing is superfluous,” he explained.

“It’s all too easy to add lines to a car, but much harder to add character by leaving lines out.

“Inside, we have been driven by the desire to ensure the XF’s cabin is as comforting as it is comfortable. New technology, including our new 10.2-inch touchscreen, is combined carefully with materials that cosset and reassure.

“The all-new XF has a clear sense of calm and strength, both outside and inside and I’m proud of my team for delivering that.”

Further details on engines and spec will be confirmed on the opening day of the New York Motor Show on April 1.

Production will be carried out at Jaguar Land Rover's Castle Bromwich plant, which also produces the F-Type and XJ.

Prices are expected to start from £34k OTR with the first models delivered this Autumn.
