Jaguar XJ50: Special edition launched to commemorate flagship saloon’s anniversary
For five decades, Jaguar’s XJ has been the ride of choice for dignitaries, ambassadors, prime ministers and, given its menacing appearance, the odd gangster too. Now the company has unveiled a special edition to commemorate its anniversary in the form of the XJ50.
On the outside, it stands apart from standard cars thanks to some 20in twin five-spoke alloys, revised black grilles and air intakes and of course its XJ50 badging. The model is available in four colours: Fuji White, Loire Blue, Santorini Black and Rosello Red.
The interior is kitted out with diamond-quilted leather upholstery with embossed headrests, while the XJ50 logo is present on the central armrest. the same badging is present on the illuminated tread-plates too, while the gearshift paddles and pedals are finished in bright metal.
All XJ50s receive Jaguar’s 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine, which makes 296bhp. Combined with the eight-speed gearbox, it gets from rest to 62mph in 5.9 seconds. It can be ordered in both standard wheelbase and long wheelbase too.
50 years in the making…
Commenting on the XJ50, Jaguar’s director of design Ian Callum said: “Spanning half a century, the Jaguar XJ remains true to its heritage with a wonderful balance of beautiful design, intelligent performance and indulgent luxury that ensures it stands out from the crowd.
“This is a car worth celebrating and the XJ50 pays homage to a giant within the Jaguar brand that we believe is one of the world’s most stylish sporting saloons.”
Launching in 1968, the XJ is currently in its eighth generation and, as appealing as the anniversary edition is, it is starting to show its age compared to key rivals. But fear not: there are rumblings the XJ will be reborn as a fully electric vehicle in the coming years. Can’t wait until then?
Order books for the XJ50 have officially opened, with UK cars priced from £74,280. Lease rates are not yet available, but in the meantime you can find hundreds of XJ lease deals by clicking here.
