Jeep Cherokee gets new range-topping diesel engine
Jeep has replaced the 168bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine found in high-spec Cherokees with a new 2.2-litre, Euro 6-compliant powerplant. Offered in 183 and 198bhp outputs, the newcomer offers better economy and more torque.
Like the engine it replaces, the 2.2-litre MultiJet is available only with the nine-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive, but other extras have been thrown in too. All Cherokee 2.2s get an electric tailgate, automatic lights and wipers, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat and an anti-dazzle rear view mirror, regardless of trim level.
Despite the increase in power over the old 2.0-litre, the 2.2 is actually more environmentally friendly, offering up to 49.5mpg and CO2 emissions of as little as 150g/km. It performs well though; 0-62mph takes between 8.5 and 8.8 seconds, depending on the variant, and there’s a caravan-friendly maximum towing weight of 2.5 tonnes.
The more powerful engine will be offered solely on top-of-the-line Limited models, while the 183bhp engine will be offered on Longitude and Longitude+ models.
Pricing for the Cherokee starts from £26,095 for the 138bhp 2.0-litre Longitude, rising to £37,995 for the range-topping 2.2 Limited 4WD.
