Kia has announced that it will be exhibiting the Cee’d in its new GT Line trim at next month’s Geneva Motor Show. Designed to give the standard car the styling touches of the hot GT version without the running costs, the new variant will hit British roads in the final quarter of 2015.

Like the Cee’d GT, the GT Line gets ‘ice cube’ LED daytime running lights, more pronounced bumpers and twin exhaust pipes on the outside, while the 17in alloys are a fresh addition.

It’s a similar story inside, where the GT Line gets the piano black trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel and aluminium pedals found in the GT’s cabin, although the GT’s Recaro seats have been left out in favour of new upholstery with grey stitching.

That’s where the similarities end though, because under the skin, the GT Line is pretty much identical to the standard Cee’d. However, the GT Line’s arrival does coincide with the introduction of a new engine.

The 1.0-litre T-GDI is a three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine with stop/start technology, allowing it to emit much less CO2 than the 131bhp 1.6-litre GDI petrol engine found in other Cee’d variants, despite only producing 13 fewer brake horsepower (118bhp). No official figures have been released as the engine has not been homologated, but expect a substantial improvement on the 1.6’s 124g/km CO2 emissions.

In addition to the new 1.0-litre petrol engine, Kia is updating the 1.6-litre diesel engine to make it both more powerful and more efficient. Output is up from 126bhp to 131bhp and maximum torque has shot up 20Nm to 285Nm, but even so, the Kia engineers are expecting a slight drop in CO2 emissions.

The other big mechanical change is the new, seven-speed, double-clutch automatic gearbox which will be available with 1.6-litre diesel GT Lines. Designed to be smoother and quicker to change than the ‘box it replaces, the new unit is also expected to make the diesel even more efficient than the old engine was with the six-speed manual gearbox. Kia is targeting a 3-5% improvement in the 0-62mph time as well as a 5-7% improvement in fuel consumption.
