Lamborghini has revealed the convertible Aventador LP750-4 Roadster SV at the Monterey Car Week event in California. It’s quite a long-winded name, but the really interesting bit is the SV, which stands for Superveloce and denotes Lamborghini’s most powerful models.

The standard Aventador SV has been out for a while now, but this is the first time that 740bhp, 6.5-litre V12 has been seen in a convertible Aventador. It may be just as powerful, but the extra weight of the Roadster (all 50kg of it) has extended the 0-62mph time from 2.8 seconds to 2.9. Fear not though, because the top speed is still an impressive 217mph.

Keeping the Roadster’s performance as close as possible to that of the standard Aventador SV has been quite a task for the Italian manufacturer’s engineers, but the weight gain has been kept to just 50kg by virtue of the roof. There’s no Bentley- or Jaguar-style automatically folding hood lurking behind the cockpit – that would weigh too much and take up far too much room. Instead, you have a pair of lift-out carbon-fibre panels, a bit like the original Porsche 911 Targa.

Stephan Winkelmann, president and CEO of Lamborghini, said: “The Superveloce is the purest, most sports-oriented and fastest series production Lamborghini ever. The Roadster version represents our commitment to satisfying our passionate clients with immensely emotional driving dynamics combined with an extraordinary open air experience.”
