Changes to London’s Congestion Charge which come into effect today mean that vehicles will have to emit 75g/km of CO2 or less to be exempt from the fee.

This comes after the Greener Vehicle Discount was scrapped in April, which set the CO2 ceiling at 100g/km, in an effort to counteract what Mayor Boris Johnson calls the ‘dieselisation of London’ as manufacturers churned out more vehicles which slipped under the 100g/km mark.

The GVD has been replaced with the Ultra Low Emission Discount which brings the carbon cut-off point to 75g/km.

Vehicles already registered with the GVD will remain exempt until June 24, 2016 but new vehicles with CO2 emissions greater than 76g/km will have to pay at least £9 a day to drive inside the capital’s Low Emission Zone.

Promoting low emission vehicles

Today’s move slashes the number of models exempt from the charge has been slashed from 61 to just ten.

These models include Toyota’s Prius Plug-In (49g), Volvo V60 Plug-In (49g), the Vauxhall Ampera/Chevrolet Volt (27g), and fully electric models such as the Nissan Leaf, Citroen C-Zero, Mitsubishi i-MiEV [pictured], and Renault’s Z.E. range – Zoe, Fluence, KangooVan.

Matthew Pencharz, the Mayor of London’s advisor on the Environment, said: “These changes are in line with the Mayor's aim to improve air quality in London by reducing emissions from private vehicles and promoting the further development of low emission vehicles.

“We want to encourage the continued development of these technologies, while also protecting the benefits to traffic flow in the centre of London that the charge provides.”
