McLaren’s new £1m hypercar, the P1, takes just 2.8 seconds to reach 62mph from a standstill. That’s just one of the many remarkable stats released by the British carmaker today as it officially hands over the keys to its first P1 customer.

Powered by a hybrid powertrain which utilises the combined efforts of a highly efficient 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 petrol engine and the lightweight electric motor, the powertrain generates 916 PS and takes just 6.8 seconds to hit 124mph from zero. This relentless acceleration continues, with 186mph reached in 16.5 seconds, a full 5.5 seconds quicker than the iconic McLaren F1. The top speed is electronically limited to 217 mph.

A remarkable set of performance figures, made almost unbelievable by the P1’s fuel economy of 34.0 mpg (on the combined cycle) and CO2 emissions of 194g/km. To put this in context, the 211mph Ferrari F12 emits 350g/km of CO2 and has an official fuel economy figure of 18.8 mpg. While the Aventador by Lamborghini fairs even worse, even if it matches the P1’s dynamic performance, with CO2 emissions of 398g/km and a wallet-aching 16.4 miles per gallon.

The car’s braking capabilities are equally as impressive, with the specially formulated carbon ceramic discs, coated in silicon carbide, able to bring the car to a halt from 62 mph in a distance of just 30.2 metres.

Speaking as the first customer received the keys to their P1, Mike Flewitt, CEO, McLaren Automotive Ltd. said: “We designed the McLaren P1 from the outset with one clear goal: to be the best driver's car on road and track. The confirmation of the performance figures underlines this. I am very proud of our Woking based team and everything they have achieved with this ambitious project.  The handover of the first McLaren P1TM is another milestone in our 50 year history."

Just 375 units of the McLaren P1 will be built out of the brand’s Woking facility, with 82 technicians taking a total of 17 days to build the car.  Once running at full capacity, the McLaren P1 line will see one car completed each day, with production due to run until mid-2015.
