It won’t reach the UK until early 2015, but the youngest and largest member of the Mercedes-Benz family – the V-Class (pictured) – is already grabbing the headlines.

Newly unveiled, the V-Class boasts room for up to right people and combines this with a strong emphasis on safety, driving pleasure and efficiency. According to Dr Deiter Zetsche, the chairman of the board of management for Damiler AG, it is an MPV that can be individualised based on tastes and requirements.

“With the new V-Class we are expanding the Mercedes-Benz premium passenger car range with a saloon for up to eight people,” he said. “Functionality is a must for an MPV. Comfort and style are the icing on the cake. The new V-Class combines both in a way no other vehicle in this segment can offer.”

The German carmaker is keen to emphasise that the V-Class is very much a Mercedes despite its size. At the centre of the front is a powerful upright radiator grille; a sculptured V-shaped bonnet; and lower air intakes. It features a contoured side wall with smooth lines.

There are numerous seating and loading configurations in the vehicle: as standard it comes with four individual luxury seats with armrests in two seat rows. As an alternative to individual seats, there is also a two-passenger bench seat or a three-passenger bench seat.

Meanwhile, efficiency has not been ignored. The V-Class comes with a state-of-the-art 2.1litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that includes two-stage turbocharging. One of the options is a V220 CDI that offers 163hp with 380Nm of torque with fuel economy increasing by 15mpg to 49.6mpg with CO2 emissions at 149g/km. There is also a V250 BlueTEC engine with a power output of 190hp and torque of 440Nm with fuel consumption at 46mpg.

UK pricing and specification are still to be revealed: they will be announced closer to the vehicle’s launch date.
