Mercedes-Benz has today revealed the Mercedes-AMG C 63, which the German company says is both more powerful and more efficient than its predecessor.

Fitted with an all-new 4.0-litre V8, the C 63 gets to 62mph slightly faster than the old C 63 AMG, while the current C-Class platform teamed with bespoke steering and suspension should make sure it retains the old car’s agility.

The hand-built V8 is twin-turbocharged to produce either 476hp and 650Nm of torque or 510hp and 700Nm depending on the variant. Both outputs are mated to a revised seven-speed automatic gearbox, which reduces shift times and goes some way to improving the car’s performance figures.

As a result, the ‘standard’ 476hp saloon will sprint to 62mph in just 4.1 seconds (a 0.4-second improvement on the old car), the estate lagging just behind with a 4.2-second time. Upgrading to the 510hp model cuts that by 0.1 seconds for both body shapes, while all C 63s are limited to a 155mph top speed.

While performance hasn’t increased much with the introduction of the new model, the fuel consumption has. Because of the new C-Class’ lightweight construction and the new drivetrain, efficiency has improved by 10mpg, or almost 43%. It makes no difference which engine is fitted; fuel economy stands at 33.6mpg for the Estate and 34.5mpg for the slightly more aerodynamic Saloon. CO2 emissions are down, too, with the Saloon’s 192g/km headline figure representing an 88g/km improvement.

As well as improving the environmental credentials of the C 63, Mercedes has reworked the C-Class’ underpinnings to make sure the C 63 handles as well as it goes. There is a unique suspension set-up with adjustable dampers which can be controlled from the cabin and a speed-sensitive, electromechanical steering system is used to make the steering heavier and more precise at speed.

From the outside, the C 63 is fairly understated. The bonnet, grille and bumpers have been subtly revised, while a few discreet ‘V8 Biturbo’ badges are dotted around. The most noticeable modifications are at the back, where there is a new quad exhaust and a small wing on the bootlid.

Inside, changes are more wholesale, with deep sports seats and a small AMG steering wheel the most noticeable differences.

No prices or specifications have been revealed as yet, but Mercedes will announce more when the car goes on sale next month ahead of deliveries in spring 2015.
