All-new £15k MG crossover undercuts the Qashqai
Full pricing and specification details have been released for the MG GS – the company’s first SUV – which is available from 16 June.
With entry-level models priced at £14,995, MG hopes the value will sway people away from more popular marques.
At launch, the only engine available is a 1.5-litre petrol that produces 164bhp. This turbocharged unit is enough to propel the GS from 0-60mph in a respectable 9.6 seconds. The six-speed manual model offers up to 46.3mpg, while producing 139g/km of C02 puts it on par with rivals’ petrol engines in the emissions stakes too.
The GS also features MG’s first DCT (dual-clutch transmission) This seven-speed automatic gearbox is only available in conjunction with the range-topping trim level for an extra £1,500.
Luckily, there’s a wider spectrum of trim levels than there are engines. Things kick off with the £14,995 Explore model. Standard equipment includes cruise control, automatic headlights and air conditioning.
Plumping for a mid-range Excite model improves amenities further and features parking sensors, a DAB digital radio and Bluetooth connectivity. The range-topping Exclusive model is priced from £19,495 and gets upmarket touches such as electrically adjustable leather sports seats and an iGo infotainment system.
MG confident
Asked about the launch of their first SUV, Matthew Cheyne, MG’s head of sales and marketing, said: “This is a great day for us, as we can finally share the information so many people have wanted to know. The MG GS is competitive in many ways and we are confident it will do well in the SUV market.”
A five-year warranty will be offered on all GS models, which should help any concerns about build quality.
Leasing rates will be available soon.
