Motorists will be urged to show a little love for their tyres all throughout October as Tyre Safety Month kicks off.

Organised by road safety group TyreSafe, 2013’s campaign will encourage motorists to carry out monthly tyre pressure checks to highlight the fuel economy and safety benefits of driving on correctly inflated tyres.

A pan-European survey recently found that out of more than 27,000 cars, 78% were being driven on under-inflated tyres.

Figures from the Department for Transport last week revealed that in 2012, 194 drivers were killed or seriously injured in the UK as a result of an accident caused by an illegal, defective or under-inflated tyre. They were also a factor in more than 1,100 road casualties in the UK during 2011.

Stuart Jackson, Chairman of TyreSafe, said: “As the nights start to draw in and the weather deteriorates, it’s essential that drivers ensure that their tyres are safe and fit for the winter ahead.

“The most basic inspection which should be carried out at least once a month, is simply checking that your tyres are properly inflated.”

Thousands of garages will support the campaign by offering free safety checks throughout October. A free iPhone app is also available, which allows drivers to obtain their correct tyre pressures, simply by inputting their vehicle registration details.
