Porsche Boxster and Cayman to be replaced by 718 range in 2016
Porsche has announced that it is to completely re-invent its naming policy by replacing the next-generation Boxster and Cayman with a new range called ‘718 Series’.
The existing nameplates won’t die out altogether though, with the ‘Boxster’ name being used to denote the 718 convertible and ‘Cayman’ being applied to the coupe.
Set for release in 2016, the new 718s are seen as spiritual successors to the original 718 of 1952. Like the original 718, the new cars will be powered by a four-cylinder ‘boxer’ petrol engine, although the modern variants will get turbochargers to increase performance and economy figures.
Other than confirmation of the engine, no other technical specifications have been announced, but Porsche has revealed that the convertible Boxster will overtake the hard-top Cayman in terms of pricing.
“The roadster will be positioned at a higher price level than the coupe – as is the case for the 911 models,” read a statement from the Stuttgart-based firm.
Porsche has also presented vague outline sketches (above) of the 718, which appear to show a very similar silhouette to that of the current models, as well as details like the small rear lip spoiler and the trademark air vent between the door and the rear wheel arch.
