Renault has released further details of the new Grand Scenic before order books for the capacious MPV open on 1 December.

It’s based on the smaller Scenic which was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Both cars get a rounded new look, latest-generation technology and class-leading cabin and luggage space.

The Grand Scenic sits next to its smaller Scenic sibling in Renault's line up, but will it turn families away from SUVs?

Like its smaller sibling, the Grand Scenic boasts a stylish exterior, marked out by a swooping roofline, a high belt-line and expansive areas of glass. The huge wheels are a feature, too, as 20in rims come as standard on every trim level. According to Renault, the massive alloys do not affect comfort as the tyres have the same profile as the old Scenic’s 17in wheels.

Inside, the cabin gets a sizeable central 8.7in touchscreen with Renault’s R-Link infotainment system – just like the latest Megane. Meanwhile, the split A-pillars and a panoramic roof have been designed to make it feel more spacious.

Interior features a 8.7in touchscreen infotainment system and a panoramic roof.

The new Grand Scenic can be ordered with five or seven seats, and the second row of seats can slide forwards to extend rear legroom or luggage space. In its five-seat configuration, the boot measures 718 litres, but that can be extended to 866 litres when the seats slide.

Technology is a key feature of the new Grand Scenic, and customers will be protected by a host of new safety kit. An autonomous emergency braking system, which can detect and stop for pedestrians and vehicles is fitted as standard, while lane-keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition and blind-spot warning are also available.

Flexible sliding seats and up to 866 litres of luggage capacity mean it's a class-leading load-lugger.

Under the bonnet, the Grand Scenic can be had with one of two petrols and four diesel units, with one of the latter being a diesel-electric ‘Hybrid Assist’ engine. The hybrid uses a generator and a 48V battery to harvest energy produced during braking and then help the diesel engine to power the wheels.

Petrol power comes courtesy of a turbocharged petrol engine with either 113bhp or 128bhp, but the diesel engines look set to be the most commonly fitted. A range-topping 158bhp dCi manages 60.1mpg and 122g/km CO2, while the most potent petrol model returns 48.7mpg and emits 129g/km of C02.

The Grand Scenic will be available as a mild hybrid in conjunction with a 1.6-litre diesel engine.

The least potent diesel will be the 109bhp Energy dCi 110, which is offered with a seven-speed twin-clutch automatic or six-speed manual transmissions. Further up the range, customers can have the 128bhp Energy dCi 130 with its six-speed manual gearbox, or the 158bhp Energy dCi 160, which is fitted with a six-speed automatic.

With its good looks and frugal engines, only time will tell us if the Grand Scenic will be able to shrug off the inherently stuffy image large MPVs seem to have these days.
