UK motorists can get hold of SsangYong’s Juke-rivalling Tivoli from as little as £159 a month on a Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) after a £3k deposit.

Starting from just under £13k OTR for the entry level SE model, the B-segment crossover is marginally larger than all but one of its immediate competitors (Vauxhall’s Mokka), measuring at 4195mm long, 1795mm wide, 1590mm high, with a 2600mm wheelbase.

It boasts a boot capacity of 423 litres; again, outsized only by the Mokka but much more space is offered by the Nissan Juke and Citroen C4 Cactus (354 and 358 litres respectively).

Paul Williams, CEO of SsangYong Motor UK, said the Tivoli represented “superb value for money”.

He added: “In the highly competitive compact SUV sector, Tivoli is a car that’s really going to cause a stir.  With its contemporary design and well styled and finished interior, this is a modern, safe, well-built and comprehensively equipped car, and at a price and warranty level no other brand can match.”

Unmatchable

Despite undercutting its main rivals in OTR terms, the unfamiliar badge and consequentially poor residual values pushes leasing rates above much of its competition in the UK with the most affordable Juke PCH ringing at £122 a month albeit it on a 9+23 8k agreement.

However, SsangYong boss Williams believes that the Tivoli is the car that “will really put SsangYong on the map and change brand perceptions”.

He added: “By any criteria but especially style, interior finish and value for money, Tivoli stands close scrutiny.

“This is a modern, safe, well-built and comprehensively equipped car, and with a price and warranty no one else can match. Anyone considering a small SUV will have to put it on their list.”

What you get for your £13k

The entry-level Tivoli (£159 p/m or £12,950 OTR) comes with a 1.6 petrol engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission and sits on 16-inch alloy wheels.

Equipment for this SE model includes a six-speaker stereo with MP3, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. There’s also cruise control, engine stop/start, manual air con, three steering modes (normal, comfort, sport), and seven airbags.

That 1.6 petrol returns 44.1mpg at 149g/km CO2. A six-speed auto is available for mid- and top-trim Tivolis and compromised efficiency to 39.2mpg and 167g/km.

Producing a power output of 126PS at 6,000rpm and up to 156Nm of torque at 4,600rpm, it can complete the 0-62mph benchmark sprint in 12 seconds with a 106mph top speed (auto: 11secs, 99mph).

Performance and running costs for the diesel remain unconfirmed but CO2 is slashed to 113g/km, suggesting mpg in the mid-50s.

Equipment

Mid-trim EX (upwards of £14,600) adds 18-inch Spiral alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, 7-inch touchscreen smart audio system with rear view camera, heated front seats, front fog lights and grey or beige leather upholstery.

Range-topping ELX (£16,000) features a smart instrument cluster, keyless start, parking sensors front and rear, privacy glass, rear spoiler, automatic headlamps, rain sensing wipers, TomTom navigation system and rear view camera.

As with the highly customisable Juke and C4 Cactus, the Tivoli integrates personalisation options. For ELX models, a £400 styling pack offers the option of five two-tone colour roof combinations, and for £350, you can add a smart red leather interior seen below.

Ssangyong has been working on Tivoli since 2011, appearing at motor shows in concept form under the X100 banner, as recently as October in Paris.

The Tivoli name has been lifted wholesale from the Italian town near Rome due to its “reputation for style, cultural heritage and beautiful location”, explains a statement from the South Korean carmaker.

It reads: “The new model gives the car an international standing, while complementing SsangYong’s heritage as a specialist SUV brand.”
