If you’re particularly observant, you may have noticed a new advisory message has made its debut on the motorways here in the UK: highlighting the importance of carrying out essential tyre checks.

The new message reads “safe tyres save lives” and can be seen on the overhead messages across the road network. It is a reaction to a report from the Highways Agency which showed that in May and June there were 2,500 tyre related breakdowns.

Tyre Safety Motorway Message

Stuart Jackson, the chairman of TyreSafe, believes it is vital that drivers heed the warning and ensure their tyres meet the legal minimum tread depth requirements, among other vital checks.

“Tyre incidents can cause a host of problems for drivers, their passengers and other road users so it’s vitally important that motorists make regular tyre checks before travelling,” he said. “The new message signs are a great reminder to drivers about the four small pieces of rubber that are responsible for them being able to brake or corner and arrive at their destination safely.

“When tyres are under-inflated, they are much more likely to suffer from a rapid failure which can have potentially catastrophic consequences. Furthermore, they will also wear out much quicker and even cause you to use more fuel.”

If you are unfortunate enough to suffer a puncture or another incident relating to your tyres, then you are advised not to attempt repairs yourself.

Instead, pull on to a hard shoulder and safely exit the vehicle from the nearside door if there is heavy traffic. Then, call the Highways Agency control centre of your recovery service from the emergency roadside telephones.
