Vodafone has introduced a new tracking system designed specifically for fleet and rental operators called Vodafone Vehicle Defence.

The company may be better known for its mobile phone network, but its Burnley-based automotive arm is one of the country’s main suppliers of in-car technology such as Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control systems and tracking devices.

Vodafone Vehicle Defence is just such a system. A fully enclosed tracking device which can be “covertly” installed and switched on and off on demand, it relays data to Vodafone via GPS and GSM technology.

Under normal conditions, the ‘black box’ sends Vodafone the vehicle’s whereabouts once per day, but it can be set up to send out real-time location data if, for example, the operator believes the vehicle has been stolen.

The tracker works in 44 different countries, and the data can be shared with the relevant police forces in order to aid vehicle recovery. Also, because it is a standalone device and not wired into the car’s on-board electronics, the device can be switched between cars in “just a few minutes”.

Vodafone offers the Vehicle Defence system with the option of either a one- or two-year subscription.
