Whether you’ve been hammering the credit card on the high street or getting hammered on the Xmas do, it’s entirely possible that some of the bigger developments in the automotive world passed you by this week.

Lucky for you, we’ve picked out the biggest car news and boiled it down into easily digestible bite-size chunks…

Weekly round 7 dec

Ford’s electric surge: Ford will pour almost £3bn into developing 13 new electric and hybrid cars before 2020. The first will be a new electric Focus, launching late 2017.

PSA-Toyota bond to spawn new MPVs: After the C1-108-Aygo city car collaboration, Toyota has teamed up with Peugeot and Citroen once again, this time on a new van-based MPV. They’ll go on sale in the latter half of 2016.

Countdown to Detroit: The first major motor show of 2016 opens on January 11 and there will be some vital new cars on show, namely the new Mercedes E-Class and its rival - Volvo’s S90.

Best and worst Christmas gifts for car lovers: Honda undies, a cuddly Skoda Yeti, James Bond Scalextric, and a £3k Bentley for two-year olds; we pick out the greatest and not-so-great car gifts.

Win a Tesla Model S: For a week. Just follow @ContractHire and tweet what you’d do with the all-electric super saloon. Remember to include #7DaysTesla hashtag.

Porsche renames Boxster and Cayman: The pair are now part of the 718 Series, so from 2016, they will be known as the ‘718 Boxster’ and ‘718 Cayman’, in reference to the original 718 from 1952.

Leasing could help push 2015’s new car registrations to a record high: 2015 could be best year on record for UK new car sales, and attractive leasing options have helped massively, so says vehicle valuers CAP.

Small business favours company cars: No-one enjoys the uncertainty of waiting for a bus or relying on a train, susceptible to a last minute cancellation. Especially small businesses. A survey has found that almost half of UK small businesses prefer to operate company vehicles rather than depend on unreliable public transport.

Ford S-Max driven: For families that may occasionally need two extra seats in the back, this large MPV is still one of the best in its class.

4x4 SsangYong Tivoli driven: If you need a small crossover with off-road ability, the all-paw Tivoli is well worth a look.

That lorry road rage video is terrifying but the rammed driver wasn’t entirely innocent: You’ve seen that video of a HGV slamming into a poor defenceless motorist’s car? Well, he kinda got what he deserved…
