BYD Seal U: New plug-in hybrid crossover revealed

  • 27 Feb 2024

BYD has unveiled its Seal U crossover at the Geneva Motor Show, with the new model being the first of the brand’s cars to feature plug-in hybrid power when it heads to the UK.

Set to arrive later this year, here’s everything you need to know.

BYD Seal U fast facts

  • Borrows styling cues from Seal fastback
  • 60-mile electric-only range
  • Large 16in rotating infotainment system
  • 1.5-litre petrol engine
  • Deliveries to start in late Spring

BYD Seal U styling

Externally, consider the Seal U a blend of the Seal fastback saloon and the BYD Atto 3. It gets the same smart front end as the low-slung Seal, but round the back its SUV DNA is clear.

It’s a smart-looking car, but not particularly interesting compared to some rivals. A range of alloy wheel options will be available, while the rear gets a similar full-width tail light bar that runs across the boot lid – much like the Atto 3.

BYD Seal interior and tech

When compared to the rest of the range, the interior offers a more dramatic change. You get a smart digital driver display, and a curvaceous dashboard that incorporates ambient lighting along the trim.

UK specs are to be confirmed, but all Seal Us feature things like wireless charging, an impressive sound system and automatic climate control.

The biggest focus though, is on the infotainment system, which is the same 16in unit found in the brand’s other cars. Its party trick? Tap a button and it’ll rotate from landscape to portrait.

BYD Seal U drivetrain

Under the skin is where this model differs the most. Until now, only fully electric BYD models have been available in the UK. From launch the Seal U will be available solely as a plug-in hybrid.

Utilising a 1.5-litre petrol engine and electric motor, its battery pack will purportedly be capable of up to 60 miles without the assistance of the internal combustion engine.

Again, specs are to be confirmed, but that level of range would put it near the top of its class.
