2022 Audi A8: Luxury saloon takes a step up

  • 01 Dec 2021

The Audi A8 has been updated for 2022, with the refreshed model featuring revised styling and updated tech.

With list prices from £74,985, here’s everything you need to know about the facelifted model.

Audi A8 styling

To the untrained eye, not much has changed on the A8, but a number of tweaks ensure it remains fresh against rivals like the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Up front, the grille has grown and the bumper design has been changed to incorporate a new set of headlights and wider air intakes. These are now Matrix LED units that use more than a million tiny mirrors to reflect light more efficiently.

The lights have also been updated at the back, where you’ll now find clever OLED units as standard. These use sensors that allow the brake lights to operate if a car or object is less than two metres away from the car when stationary.

Audi A8 interior and tech

Again, changes don’t look too dramatic on the inside, but big deeper and you’ll find a number of changes. The infotainment system and screens have been updated, with the two central units measuring 10.1in, while the digital driver display is 8.6in.

Several updated packages are on offer that offer dozens of individual assistance systems to the driver. Examples include Park, City and Tour packs, with the former enabling the A8 to automatically manoeuvre in and out of tight parking spots.

The emphasis on passenger comfort is of course the A8’s most important attribute, and you’ll now find two 10.1in individual screens for the rear passengers mounted to the rear of the front seats.

Although we won’t be seeing the ultra-luxury China-bound Horch model, other nice touches include massaging rear seats and even heated foot rests.

Audi A8 drivetrain and engines

Not much has changed at all on the engine front, with a range of potent petrols and diesels on offer. The range kicks off with a 3.0-litre diesel that produces 285hp and a 3.0-litre petrol producing 340hp.

Opting for the TFSIe hybrid ups this to 460hp, while the range-topping 4.0-litre engine still features potent V8 power. The S8 uses the same unit, but ups power to 570hp allowing 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds.

All models feature an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive, while the S8 adds an all-wheel steering system and an active suspension set-up.
