Tesla Model Y Performance | First-drive review

The Tesla Model Y has historically been one of the most popular SUVs to lease, and when the new version arrived earlier this year, it ensured the family EV kept pace within an increasingly competitive segment.

Now, however, the Performance version has arrived. This means the practical five-door SUV can now keep pace with a Porsche 911 GT3 too. We had the chance to drive it recently. Here’s our thoughts.

What is it?

The Model Y Performance is the range-topping version of Tesla’s popular SUV. The Standard Range and Long Range versions focus on efficiency and outright practicality, while the Performance takes those foundations and adds serious pace.

Several subtle tweaks ensure it offers a true performance driving experience.

So, while it may use the same dual-motor all-wheel drive set-up as the Long Range, the output of its motors jump to a combined 460bhp and offer more than 600Nm of torque. The result? A 0-60mph sprint under 3.5 seconds; absurd for something this practical.

But Tesla is keen to emphasise the fact this car isn’t about outright acceleration. Compared to the old Performance model, it’s been given a number of subtle tweaks to ensure it offers an all-round performance driving experience.

For example, you now have the ability to tailor the suspension and performance settings, while improved damping and refinement improvements really do make it feel more planted than the outgoing version; this car doesn’t float or roll as much as Teslas of old.

What’s the interior like?

If you’ve ever been in a Tesla before, you’ll know the brand’s approach to interiors is minimalist in the extreme. That hasn’t changed with new Model Y: the 15.4in central touchscreen dominated the dashboard.

Infotainment is quick, responsive and easy to navigate once you’re used to it.

Unlike the Model 3, there is still a traditional indicator stalk, along with window switches and some haptic controls on the steering wheel.

In terms of extra equipment unique to the Performance model, things are rather limited. The Performance insignia is proudly displayed on the headrests of the front sports seats, and there’s some carbon fibre trim, but for the most part it’s business as usual.

Standard equipment is impressive though, with the Performance featuring aluminium pedals, ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof and wireless charging as standard.

What’s the tech like?

Tesla has long been the benchmark for in-car tech, and the Performance continues that tradition. The infotainment system is powered by Tesla’s proprietary software, and it remains one of the slickest, most responsive systems on the market. There’s Google Maps-based navigation, Spotify integration, and over-the-air software updates that continuously improve features and performance.

The Tesla App also remains a key part of the ownership experience. You can pre-condition the car, schedule charging, or even “summon” the vehicle in and out of tight parking spaces – all from your smartphone.

Audio quality is exceptional thanks to a 13-speaker premium sound system, while wireless phone charging, multiple USB-C ports, and integrated video streaming apps (including Netflix and YouTube) make long charging stops a breeze.

Charging, by the way, is still a Tesla strong point. With access to the brand’s Supercharger network, you can add around 150 miles of range in just 15 minutes at a 250kW charger. The Performance’s 82kWh battery delivers a real-world range of around 280–300 miles, depending on driving style and conditions.

What makes the Performance variant stand out?

While every Model Y is quick, the Performance takes things to another level. The acceleration is relentless and near-instant, with the kind of G-force you normally associate with supercars. Plant your right foot and the world blurs — the sensation is almost comical in something shaped like a family SUV.

The lowered ride height and firmer damping reduce body roll, while the all-wheel-drive system shuffles torque seamlessly to maintain traction. It corners flat and feels far more agile than its 2,000kg weight suggests.

The braking system has also been uprated, offering stronger bite and more confidence during spirited driving. Regenerative braking remains adjustable, and in its most aggressive setting, you can drive almost entirely with one pedal.

Aesthetically, the Performance isn’t flashy – but that’s part of its appeal. It looks purposeful without being ostentatious, and that subtle carbon spoiler and aggressive wheel design hint at its capability without shouting about it. It’s also worth mentioning how quiet it is.

Even when pressing on, road and wind noise are well contained, and the electric motors produce only a faint whine. That refinement makes it a genuine dual-purpose machine – one minute a silent cruiser, the next a point-and-shoot performance car.

 

Should you lease one?

The Performance sits above the Long Range in the Model Y line-up, and leasing one will naturally cost more per month. But how much more depends on your priorities.
