BMW 5 Series & i5 Touring: Estate cars revealed
Hot on the heels of the 5 Series and i5 saloons, BMW has revealed the new 5 Series Touring and i5 Touring in full.
Featuring similar design cues to the saloon but adding a more practical boot, here’s everything you need to know.
BMW 5 Series Touring styling
It’s clear that the pair are heavily modelled on the saloons, and feature the same rakish front end and sharp headlights design. Those neat door handles and stunning 19in alloy wheel design are also present, but its silhouette is what sets this pair apart.
With an estate rear end, this is clearly a practical beast of burden and it’s designed to offer an alternative to cars like the Audi A6 Avant. The rear benefits from a similar set of LED tail lights as the saloon, while the bumper features a large diffuser in contrasting black trim.
Inside, it’s largely the same story – looks and tech will be carried over from the saloon. The cabin is as driver-focused as ever, but changes include a vast 14.9in touchscreen infotainment system with BMW’s latest iDrive tech. It’s compatible with Android Auto and Apply CarPlay and dominates the dashboard.
It moulds neatly into the 12in digital driver display, that offers vivid graphics and customisable displays. It’s a stunning system which on the looks front, can rival the likes of Mercedes. The technology itself is impressive too, with the i5 even featuring a games console that you can play as it’s charging.
Of course the big change is at the back. The 5 Series Touring features a practical 570-litre boot, which increases to 1,700 litres when the rear seats are folded down. It’s still somewhat smaller than rivals like the E-Class though, but by and large it should be enough space for most people’s needs.
BMW 5 Series Touring drivetrains
The same options as the saloon will be available from launch. That means there’ll be a number of petrol options, as well plug-in hybrids.
Models will include the 520i and the 530e. The latter combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, and will be able to travel around 60 miles on electric power alone.
BMW i5 Touring EV
The all-electric i5 will also be available as a Touring model, which will mean two power options from launch – the eDrive 40 and the M60. The former is rear-wheel drive, while the M60 features xDrive four-wheel drive and could get a 0-62mph time of less than four seconds.
The range of the eDrive 40 is 340 miles, while the potent M60 can achieve 314 miles between charges, namely because of its heavier all-wheel drive dual-motor set-up.

Order books opening in spring 2024. Deliveries will commence in the UK towards the summer.
