BYD Atto 2: Brand expands offering with compact crossover
Say hello to the BYD Atto 2. Sitting below the Atto 3 and above the Dolphin in the range, it’s another electric SUV and is capable of almost 200 miles of range.
It’ll compete against cars like the Peugeot e-2008 and MG ZS EV when it arrives later this year. Here’s what you need to know.
BYD Atto 2 fast facts
- Brand’s most affordable SUV to date
- It’ll launch with 194 miles of range
- Gets new chunky styling
- Available to order from February
- List prices to be confirmed
BYD Atto 2 styling
While there are notable similarities with the larger Atto 3, the Atto 2 ets chunkier, more squared off looks than its larger sibling. Up front, the headlights are more angular, while black body cladding gives it a tougher look.
The front bumper has sharp angles for a dynamic look, along with bright highlights low down and efficiency-boosting vertical air curtains at the outer edges.
The C pillar towards the rear of the car gives it a floating roof appearance, while round the back you’ll find a neat full-width lighting bar. All in all, it’s a smart design that’ll fare well next to competition like the Peugeot e-2008, even if it is a little less interesting to look at.
Four paint choices will be available from launch. ATTO 2 comes in Climbing Grey, pictured here, along with three optional shades – Hiking Green, Skiing White and Cosmos Black.
BYD Atto 2 interior and tech
Inside, BYD’s clever rotating touchscreen is the centre piece of the dashboard, below which you’ll find some square air vents. Most of the controls are found within touchscreen menus, although there is a comprehensive panel of buttons on the steering wheel.
The centre console contains a pair of cup-holders and an integrated arm rest, which opens up to reveal one of several storage areas. Being designed on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 means the floor is completely flat, resulting in impressive rear leg room.
In the boot, there’s 400 litres of space, which compares well with rivals – that’s more space than many petrol-powered compact crossovers.
BYD Atto 2 powertrain
At launch, you’ll have the choice of a single powertrain – a 174hp model that uses a 45kWh battery. It’s capable of up to 194 miles of range, which doesn’t quite beat some similarly sized EVs. That said, there’s probably going to be a longer range offering that launches down the line.
We’ll bring you further details on that one as and when they are revealed.
