Ford has revived its iconic Capri badge for its all-new electric car. Following the lead of the Explorer, the Capri will be Ford’s third EV to hit the UK market and takes the form of an SUV coupe.

Sharing lots of parts with the Explorer, it’s set to arrive later this year. Here’s everything we know so far.

2024 Ford Electric Capri

Ford Capri styling

Like the Puma and Mustang Mach-E, the new Capri uses an iconic name associated with the brand. But that’s where the similarities with the coupe of the 70s and 80s stops. The new Capri is a high-riding SUV with a swoopy rear end.

It’s a popular body style, with lots of manufacturers now offering this type of “Coupe SUV”. Up front, there is somewhat of a likeness with the classic Capri, with four headlights marked out by separate daytime running lights that meld neatly into the front grille and apron.

It certainly offers a different look to the latest Explorer EV with its sloping rear end and fastback feel. Down the side, you’ll get 19in and 20in alloy wheels depending on specification. At the rear, Ford once again emulate the look of the original Capri courtesy of some stylistic tail lights.

The inside, however, follows the Explorer’s lead much more closely. You get the same tech and trim, including the 15in infotainment touchscreen that hides a secret – it can be electronically adjusted fore and aft to reveal a hidden locker area for storing valuables.

Ford’s impressive Megaconsole is also nestled between the front seats, offering a whopping 17 litres of space. Exact specifications and trims are to be confirmed, but it’s likely they’ll mirror those of the Explorer.

Ford Capri powertrain

Like the Explorer, the Capri borrows many parts from Volkswagen’s EVs. That means from launch there will be two drivetrains to choose from: a single motor and a dual motor. The single motor is rear-wheel drive and produces 286hp, while the dual motor model produces 340hp.

With all-wheel drive and a 0-60mph time of 5.3 seconds, the dual motor car uses a slightly larger 79kWh battery pack than the single motor model, which uses a 77kWh unit.

The 77kWh unit can deliver up to 390 miles of range, while the heavier dual motor 79kWh model can achieve up to 368 miles. Those are quite impressive numbers for its class, offering more range than many rivals – including the Volkswagen ID.5 which it shares its parts with.
