BMW X3 styling

Externally, the marks a notable change compared to the outgoing model that was starting to show its age a little. Up front, the new model gets a fresh grille design in line with other new BMW models, while the headlights appear more sculpted and sit flush with the redesigned bumper and wings.

Round the back, the tail lights taper neatly into the boot lid, and depending on specification round the side you’ll get 18in, 19in or 20in alloy wheels. Proportionally, it’s very similar to the outgoing model, although there are less sharp edges down the doors and the wheel arch lines are more prominent.

BMW X3 interior and tech

Things have really improved inside, where you’ll now find a brand-new dashboard featuring a large screen that makes up both the digital driver display and the infotainment system. It uses the latest version of iDrive and is of course compatible with smartphone mirroring apps like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Voice control has been improved too, although there are still a number of physical buttons within the centre console that control various functions. The ambient lighting has been improved too, and is now present not only in the doors but around the centre console too.

BMW X3 drivetrains and engines

From launch, you’ve got four options. The entry-level powertrain consists of a 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 208hp. There’s also a 2.0-litre turbo diesel that produces 197hp.

The most popular model for fleets at least, will be the plug-in hybrid model. This all-new version adds an electric motor to the 2.0-litre petrol engine and offers a combined output of almost 300hp. The best bit? It’ll top 55 miles on electric-only power.

If you want your X3 with a bit more get up and go, the M50 will be the one to go for. Featuring a six-cylinder petrol engine, this potent petrol model gets from rest to 62mph in just 4.6 seconds. The suspension and chassis also gets upgrades to make it corner and handle in a sportier manner.

X3 M50s will also get a raft of other features including a beefier body kit, dual exhaust pipes and 20in alloy wheels.
