Renault 5 EV styling

Externally, the 5 EV stays true to the concept that was designed in 2021, itself being a 21st century reboot of the 1970s design classic. With squared off edges, stunning tail lights and neat touches, we think it’s one of the best EV designs of the last few years.

Front on, it’s clear that this is a Renault. While its DNA is obvious, the design of the front headlights and daytime running lights help it stand out as a modern, crisp design. A charge level indicator is reminiscent of the original 5’s air intakes, and is a neat touch up front.

Renault 5 side profile

Its silhouette makes it even clearer this is a car that’s directly inspired by the iconic original model. A sweeping rear end and general stance give the car a purposeful look.

Round the back, the tail lights are actually quite intricate pieces made up of a number of elements, which mould neatly into a bar running the width of the tail gate. This incorporates Renault lettering and a retro-themed “5” – extremely reminiscent of the original launch car’s from the 70s.

Renault 5 EV interior and tech

The retro touches don’t just adorn the outside. The dashboard has been given a quilted look – just like the vinyl panelling on the original version.

There’s a lot of customisable options on offer, with upholstery and trim made from sustainable and recycled products.

The coolest option (or most useless) is the availability of a wicker baguette holder that sprouts from the centre console. You can also swap little bits of trim – like the tip of the gear selector – depending on your preferences.

The infotainment screen and digital driver display sit neatly within a single panel in front of the driver. The touchscreen will be a 10in unit, while a 7in or 10in digital driver display is offered depending on specification.

Renault 5 EV drivetrains

The car sits on a cleverly packaged platform that incorporates a trick rear suspension compared to the majority of electric vehicles in its class. From launch, three power levels will be offered – 95hp, 120hp and 150hp.

40kWh and 52kWh battery packs will be offered, with range for the smaller version standing at 186 miles, rising to 249 miles for the larger option – very similar to keys rivals like the Mini Cooper Electric.

They are all front-wheel drive models, with the three capable of 0-62mph in 12 seconds, 9 seconds and 8 seconds respectively. That kind of power puts the range in the same ballpark as cars like the ID.3.

We’re sure that more potent variants will arrive later down the line, including the Alpine A290. That won’t be available until later after launch though.
