A stretched version of SsangYong's popular Tivoli is now in showrooms. The new Tivoli XLV boasts an extended body and a bigger boot, but no extra space-sapping seats.

As readers of our reviews will testify, we were pretty happy with the Tivoli as it was, but SsangYong has grown the already spacious Tivoli into the Tivoli XLV – you could say a Tivoli estate.

From the front, very little has changed. The model shares the same platform and wheelbase as the Tivoli, but features a lengthened body from behind the C-pillar, an increase of 238mm over the standard car that swells the boot to a cavernous 720 litres – almost 300 more than its smaller sibling.

The Tivoli XLV can be ordered with both two-wheel drive and 4x4 and manual or automatic gearboxes, although from launch, it’s only be available with the 1.6-litre diesel engine already found in the Tivoli.

The diesel unit promises affordable running costs with CO2 emission levels of just 117g/km (on the two-wheel drive, manual transmission with Stop/Start) and up to 62.8mpg (on the Combined cycle).

Considering its class and cheap list price, the Tivoli XLV is brimming with equipment. Standard kit includes digital-dual zone air conditioning, a seven-inch touchscreen, satellite navigation, rear-view camera, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, rain sensing wipers and automatic headlight activation.

Discussing the European launch, Paul Williams, CEO of SsangYong Motor UK, said: “Now SsangYong has gone a step further by launching an extended car to provide even more carrying capacity and practicality, and we believe that this will enable us to compete with SUVs such as the Nissan Qashqai.”

A buoyant Williams added that annual sales from the Tivoli platform, including the XLV, have already exceeded 100,000 cars this year. Entry-level XLVs are priced from £18,250, which sounds like a lot of car for the money. However, we’ll have to wait and see if lease prices can match the low list price.
