Volkswagen Tiguan trim levels 2022: Models and specs compared

Back to 'Expert guides'

If you’re considering leasing a Volkswagen Tiguan, you aren’t alone – it was one of the most popular lease cars last year. The Tiguan underwent a mild refresh last year and, considering its popularity, we thought it was about time we take a look at the key Tiguan trim levels that are available in 2022.

A total of five are on offer, but the right one for you will depend on your own tastes and how much you want to spend. A key benefit of leasing is that monthly payments are largely based on a car’s future value, and the higher the spec, the higher it will be worth in a few years’ time.

As such, it might surprise you how affordable certain trim levels can be compared to other forms of finance. Without further ado, here’s the key Tiguan models you can choose from.

Volkswagen Tiguan Life

The Tiguan Life can be considered the entry-level trim, but don’t let that put you off. A recent technical overhaul means that all models come full of the latest toys. For Life models, this means an 8in touchscreen infotainment system with VW’s Discover Media navigation with internet streaming, front and rear parking sensors and three-zone automatic climate control.

On the outside you’ll find 18in alloy wheels, while rear privacy glass is also standard. On the safety front, the Life also impresses, with adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency front brake assist on offer. Other notable functions include lane keep assist, a multifunction front camera and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

On the outside, the Elegance is made obvious by its larger 19in alloy wheels and IQ. Dynamic lighting package. The latter adds dynamic indicators and tail lights, along with separate cornering lights. They look great, but arguably give you a bit more safety too.

Things take a step up inside, where you’ll now find the winter pack included. This adds heated front seats along with heated washer jets for the windscreen. Keyless entry and an electric tailgate is standard too, while in those summer months you’ll be glad of the panoramic sunroof with tilt and slide function.

Tech-wise, the driver now gets the fantastic Digital Cockpit Pro courtesy of a 10.25in screen. This gives the driver a vivid multi-colour digital display that can be programmed to show various information profiles. A rear view camera is added to the list of standard equipment too.

Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line

If you want your Tiguan to stand out from the crowd, R-Line is the trim to go for. Thanks to large 20in Misano alloy wheels and a complete body kit, it looks purposeful and sporty. Xenon headlights are now standard too, while the interior benefits from R-Line additions such as stainless steel trim, pedals and its own upholstery. Other touches include R-Line logos and a rear spoiler.

To give it an even sportier feel, the steering wheel is swapped out for a flat-bottomed one with gear paddles – it’s heated too. Sports seats and a lowered sports suspension are also present, making this the ultimate model of the standard Tiguan line-up. Keyless start is now standard along with keyless entry.

In terms of performance – and price – the Tiguan R stands out from the rest of the range. VW says it has been directly inspired by motorsport, and it’s officially the fastest Tiguan ever. But aside from the potency, what else marks the special car out?

Plump for the Rand it’s immediately made obvious on the outside. Huge 21in Estoril black alloy wheels are standard, as is a large rear spoiler and the R-specific body kit. It’s also available in that glorious Lapiz Blue (an exclusive colour for this model only). When combined with those blue calipers and the brushed aluminum trim, it’s certainly the best-looking Tiguan.

You get specific carpets with decorative blue stitching, while the dash trim is now adorned by sporty carbon grey trim pieces. While we aren’t talking about the Tiguan R’s performance credentials in this piece, it’s worth noting that all Tiguan Rs feature Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system too. Not only does this increase its sporting abilities, but it adds that extra layer of safety too.
