Let’s start on the outside, because that’s where you’ll find the most differences compared with the outgoing car. The Clio has had a comprehensive facelift, with the front getting a new grille, badge and a completely redesigned bumper.

Around the sides and back, changes are less dramatic, but there is now the option of the sporty Esprit Alpine model, which is the car you see in these pics. It gets some neat details including aluminium-effect trim pieces and a stunning set of 17in alloy wheels.

Inside, except for a few bits of trim, things are largely the same as the outgoing model. That means you get a vivid 7in digital driver display and a 9.3in portrait-style infotainment touchscreen. On some models, this can be upgraded to an even larger unit.

The system itself is the latest Renault EasyLink – it’s pretty slick to use and supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There’s also a host of driver assist systems on offer including adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking.

The new Esprit Alpine model features some neat touches including more brushed aluminium trim and a rather lovely set of sports seats resplendent in leather – with that famous Alpine logo embossed into the backrests.

All Clio models will now feature a single unit – the 1.5-litre E-Tech hybrid petrol. Rather than just a mild-hybrid, this features full hybrid tech, allowing the car to move under electric power at slow speeds.

Renault claims this vastly reduces fuel consumption around town. It produces 145hp and, according to the official stats, CO2 output is just 93g/km. All models feature an automatic gearbox, with six speeds being offered when the petrol engine and electric motor are combined.
