Volkswagen has given its Passat a makeover, with only the estate version set to be available in the UK.

With improved plug-in options, a fresh face and new tech, here’s what you need to know.

It’s clear that this is an all-new model, with the revised estate featuring a sharper look up front and a completely refreshed design. The bumpers feature larger vents than before, while a host of new 17, 18 and 19in alloy wheels feature.

The boot now benefits from a full-width light bar,and even though it’s slightly larger than the outgoing model, the proportions have improved. R-Line models get sportier looking bumpers, alloys and numerous other bits of trim that give the car a more aggressive look.

The minimalist interior is as well made as ever, and like the exterior the cabin has had a thorough refresh. There’s a host of new trim pieces, while all models feature a large infotainment screen that’s angled slightly towards the driver.

12.9in and 15in units are available depending on specification, while Volkswagen’s digital driver display is as vivid as ever. The new car is slightly larger than before, giving the Passat even more boot space as well as boosting rear leg room.

From launch, there’s three petrol options, three diesel options and two petrol plug-in hybrid models. A 1.5-litre petrol engine is available with mild-hybrid tech, while two larger 2.0-litre options produce 204hp and 260hp respectively; the latter featuring 4motion all-wheel drive.

Two plug-in hybrid options utilise the smaller 1.5-litre unit, and produce 204hp and 272hp respectively. The battery in both models has almost doubled in size, meaning you can travel on electric power alone for more than 60 miles.

The same 2.0-litre diesel engine is used throughout the range, but is available with a range of power options. Again, the most potent unit features all-wheel drive as standard.
